Answer: We have learned that students can best learn about grammar and the parts of speech when the instruction is given within the context of students' writing and through the use of mentor text. The nine parts of speech and their functions are:
1. nouns: names a person, place, or thing (dog, city, Dad)
2. pronouns: take the place of nouns (she, it, us)
3. verbs: show action or tell what the noun does (run, frolic, swing)
4. adverbs: describe verbs, other adverbs, and adjectives (loudly, well-mannered)
5. adjectives: describe nouns or pronouns (twenty, fat, green)
6. prepositions: show how words are related (under, beside)
7. conjunctions: connect words, clauses, or phrases (or, and, but)
8. interjections: show strong feelings or emotions (wow, ouch)
9. articles: one of three words used with nouns to limit or define (a, an the)
