How does cocaine abuse in pregnant women affect the fetus?

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary. Pregnant women who abuse cocaine increase the risk of stillbirth, low birth weight, and birth defects. Infants exposed to cocaine prenatally are often excitable and irritable, or lethargic; sleep is disturbed (Richardson et al., 2013). There are suggestions of delays in cognitive development, even among preadolescents (Richardson et al., 2013). Children who are exposed to cocaine prenatally also show problems at later ages.
