Discuss the Purist, Period II and the 1990s in relationship to the emergence mixed methods research.
What will be an ideal response?
Purist Era – both quantitative and qualitative researchers advanced their view as being the better approach. This lasted from the early 1900s to the 1950s-1960s. Period II – started in 1960s and extended to the 1980s. The focus of this period was a beginning attempt to find commonalities between research paradigms and to begin to use mixed methods. The research designs were hypothetically view as being equal and the result was models that used parallel methods simultaneously and sequentially, but equally. The 1990s saw a more advanced approach to mixing methods, with the use of different states of implementing the methods. Based on the purpose of the study, there may be a single research paradigm used, and later, based on a series of studies on the same topic, another method might be used. The introduction of mixed methods research models essentially ended the significant debates and “wars” over which research method was superior.
