State the pros and cons of police consolidation. What will happen in the future and why?

What will be an ideal response?

The proliferation and budgeting of many thousands of local police departments of less that fifty sworn officers is an incredible expense. These small police departments can provide a wide range of services but cannot deal with major crimes.

Consolidating police departments with a higher paying larger department and the need for new equipment and uniforms can be an expensive proposition. Many citizens will miss knowing their local police officers and local government will miss the prestige and power of having a small personal police department.

In the history of policing and democratic government, controlling local police in the small department is totally enshrined in American hearts and this is a major obstacle to consolidation but it comes at a high cost in the 21st century. And just maybe, new breakthroughs in information technology and regional police service centers may allow many communities to retain local departments.century.
