What are Gersick’s (1991) three barriers to change? Explain why each one contributes to resisting change.
What will be an ideal response?
Gersick’s three barriers to change are cognition, motivation, and obligation. Cognitive frameworks limit one’s ways of looking at reality. Motivation to change is low because change is associated with loss and uncertainty. Obligation refers to stakeholders’ beliefs that it is their job to keep the status quo, based on their current expectations and assumptions about how the system is supposed to operate.
