Briefly describe how a cogeneration or combined heat and power (CHP) functions

What will be an ideal response?

In such a system, two useful forms of energy are produced from the same fuel source. For example, the steam produced in generating electricity in a CHP system can also be used to heat the plant or other nearby buildings, rather than being released into the environment and wasted. The energy efficiency of these systems is 75-90% compared to 30-40% for coal-fired boilers and nuclear power plants.
