Explain why Americans believe that “doing” is better than “being.”

What will be an ideal response?

Many Americans think of themselves as working to live, but in contrast, for many Americans, work becomes a form of identity—that is, they live to work. The American culture is very performance-oriented, and many Americans perform or achieve things through their jobs. This often makes work life central to who a person is. A “being” culture tends to place more value on non-work activities, such as spending time with family and enjoying life outside of work. In the American culture, the emphasis is on accomplishing things and doing, often in association with one’s work life.
