On July 16, 1945, at precisely 5:30 A. M., an atomic bomb was successfully detonated in the New Mexican desert. Ten days later, Allied leaders assembled at Potsdam sent an ultimatum to the enemy: "The alternative to surrender is prompt and utter destruction."
