Explain how chromatin remodeling can involve changes to DNA instead of histones

What will be an ideal response?

The addition of methyl groups to cytosine bases in the DNA of promoters turns genes off by a process called gene silencing. The presence of methyl groups may prevent the binding of transcriptional proteins to the gene, and methylated DNA binds to non-histone proteins that promote the formation of genetically inactive chromatin, termed silent chromatin.
