Hen examining student samples of work in practicing dividing whole numbers, what should teachers expect to find and then do to help the student?

What will be an ideal response?

Complete answers will include the following descriptions. The teacher may expect to find two error patterns. Error pattern 1 incorrectly places the digits in the quotient. The teacher should ask the student to estimate the quotient for each answer and then compare the estimate to the answer. Error pattern 2 does not record a zero in the quotient. The student may not be recording a zero when he or she cannot divide or he or she may be bringing down groups of two digits at a time from the dividend.
