Why must documents be authenticated? How is the authentication of electronic documents different from the authentication of paper documents?

What will be an ideal response?

Authentication is necessary in order for documents to be admitted into evidence at trial. It demonstrates that the document is what the proponent claims it to be. The authentication of paper documents required examination of the physical characteristics of the document, such as handwriting. Electronic documents are authenticated by examining their metadata.
