How should economics be taught in an elementary school social studies program?
What will be an ideal response?
Teaching economics requires understanding the content, knowing how to scaffold concepts, and helping students experience economics as part of their everyday lives. Knowledgeable teachers must also master a variety of teaching strategies, or pedagogical content knowledge. Approaches to social studies teaching described throughout the book are applicable to teaching economics. The activity selected must be linked to the outcomes of the lesson, or what you want students to know or be able to do after they complete the experience. Find ways to integrate economics within other social sciences, this helps students make linkages across the curriculum and provides an authentic context. Real-life experiences and children’s literature make the content easier to understand while demonstrating the applicability of the content. The most prevalent way to introduce economics to elementary students is through “needs and wants.”
