Describe three techniques teachers can use to assess writing fluency
What will be an ideal response?
Teachers consider the following as they assess writing fluency:
• Automaticity. Teachers assess students' ability to spell high-frequency words and use strategies to spell other words on spelling tests or by examining their writing samples. Speed. Teachers time students as they write a paragraph or two to assess their writing speed. Students write for 1 to 5 minutes about a familiar topic and then teachers count the number of words they've written and divide the number of words written by the number of minutes to determine students' writing rates. Teachers repeat this assessment several times a year using a different, but equally familiar, topic.
• Writer's Voice. Teachers reread several compositions students have written to evaluate their unique style. There aren't standards to use in assessing voice, so teachers often compare one student's writing to classmates' to rate it as comparable or above or below average.
