An antibody is a protein that destroys or inactivates a specific antigen. When an antibody reacts with its specific antigen the two immediately combine, causing the antibody to attach itself to the blood cell containing the antigen. Because antibodies can simultaneously be attached to antigens located on two different red blood cells, this creates a vast network of cross-linked cells usually seen as clumping or agglutination.
