Then refrigerators were being developed for the mass market, the gases used as refrigerants were toxic and dangerous. Charles Kettering, a scientist working for DuPont, developed an alternative refrigerant known as Freon. This gas appeared to be a perfect solution to the problem. It appeared to be almost inert (didn’t react with other chemicals), and it wasn’t toxic or flammable. From that time onward, Freon was used when a refrigerant was
needed, so it was found in refrigerators, freezers, and air condition systems in homes, automobiles, and offi ces. In the 1970s, it was discovered that chlorofl uorocarbons (CFCs) in Freon were damaging the Earth’s ozone layer.
CFCs reacted when they found their way to the upper atmosphere. From 1990 onward, Freon and all other CFCs were banned for use as a refrigerant.
