Explain the differences between stuttering modification and fluency-shaping therapy
What will be an ideal response?
Stuttering modification focuses on the reduction of avoidance behaviors while teaching the client to change the form of his or her stuttering. The ultimate goal for the client is to accept stuttering, confront and learn to stutter in an easier manner. Clients are taught that stuttering will always be a part of their lives. On the other hand, fluency shaping therapy replaces stuttered speech with fluent speech. The ultimate goal is for the client to maintain fluent speech during a conversation. Clients learn to be fluent either following the production of fluent speech with a reward or by teaching the client as set of skills (e.g. prolonged speech) that will assist in the development of fluent speech. For many clinicians,
the focus of treatment is to teach the client to be more fluent while also helping the client to deal with his or her emotional reactions to stuttering.
