Students' examples will vary.
When people border dwell, they live between cultures and often experience contradictory cultural patterns. The three types of border dwellers are those through travel, through socialization, and through relationships.
Border dwelling through travel refers to the fact that some people travel between cultures voluntarily and involuntarily, and for both short and long periods of time. These include tourists, immigrants, and missionaries.
Border dwelling through socialization refers to the fact that some people grow up living on the borders between cultural groups, such as having parents of two different cultures.
Border dwelling through relationships refers to the fact that some people have intimate partners whose cultural backgrounds differ from their own, such as interracial or interethnic romantic relationships.
Encapsulated marginal people feel constrained and "trapped" as they attempt to negotiate living on the border between cultures. They may try to assimilate, but never feel integrated, comfortable, or "at home." On the other hand, constructive marginal people thrive in a border dweller life; they see the benefits of engaging in multiple cultures while at the same time recognizing the challenges of living on the border.
