Define motor vehicle pursuits and identify what steps can be taken to reduce the risks associated with vehicle pursuits.

What will be an ideal response?

Motor vehicle pursuits are an event involving one or more law enforcement officers attempting to apprehend a suspected or actual violator of law in a motor vehicle while the driver is using evasive tactics, such as high-speed driving, driving off a highway, turning suddenly, or driving in a legal manner but failing to yield to officer’s signal to stop. The nature of the pursuit poses a danger to the suspect, to the police, and to the public. As such, many police department have adopted policies designed to restrict officers’ discretion in these situations. Policies may set maximum allowable speed, limit the number and types vehicles involved in a pursuit, and specify the roles and responsibilities of officers involved in the pursuit as well as the nature of communication.
