To be in compliance with the ADA, business owners must make their premises accessible to the disabled by providing reasonable accommodations. Explain the difference between reasonable accommodations and placing an undue hardship on businesses. What are the penalties for businesses that fail to comply with ADA requirements?

What will be an ideal response?

ADA requires businesses to provide accommodations to persons with disabilities, and it applies to both employees and customers of the business. While the term reasonable accommodation is open to interpretation, there are limits on what the law expects. Employers are protected from incurring inordinate costs to accommodate handicaps in that the law also has a provision that such accommodation should not require the business to experience undue hardship such as making renovations so extensive as to keep the business from being profitable.

Penalties for noncompliance include civil fines for up to $50,000 for the first violation and $100,000 for subsequent violations. Handicapped people can obtain an injunction against the business, which means they may be prohibited from doing business for a while. Also, courts can award monetary damages to disabled people victimized by discrimination.
