Defend or refute: Preschool children who are capable of learning the alphabet and word lists should learn them at that time

What will be an ideal response?

In general, this statement should be refuted. The key here is to focus on the motivation of the child. If children are really motivated to learn such things, they will do so naturally on their own. When such drills and memorization activities are forced on children who lack this motivation, damage can be done. Associating language and learning to read with tedious activities can eliminate or decrease a child’s desire to learn to read. Research has also shown that this is not a natural part of learning to read. Once reading is seen as a dull and boring activity, it is difficult to change that attitude. Developmental appropriateness must be considered.
