Explain the concept of isostatic rebound, and cite evidence for rebound that has occurred since the end of the
Pleistocene. What will be an ideal response?
Isostatic rebound is the vertical recovery of continental crust to its former elevation after the
melting of an ice sheet. Driven by adjustments in the upper mantle, the recovery is slower
than the disappearance of the ice. Evidence for isostatic rebound includes Scandinavian
docks, which were stranded above sea level as that landmass rose. There is also uplift of the
Great Lakes region.
