While efforts are being made to prevent-or control-air, soil, and water pollution, the problem is very complex. It involves balancing our current use of natural resources and conserving them for future use. The real problem-from a small business perspective-is balancing environmental needs with economic ones. This is becoming increasingly difficult; for example, court rulings have held that banks may be liable when their customers pollute, so banks have started demanding an environmental audit and proof that customers have never polluted.
