Briefly discuss how the issues of values are used in counseling and research.
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: Counselor training programs have emphasized the importance of understanding one’s values and how they potentially impact the counseling process. According to the American Counseling Association Code of Ethics Standard B.4.b Personal Values, “Counselors are aware of—and avoid imposing—their own values, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. Counselors respect the diversity of clients, trainees, and research participants and seek training in areas in which they are at risk of imposing their own values onto clients, especially when the counselor’s values are inconsistent with the client’s goals or are discriminatory in nature.” Another ACA Standard, A.11.b Values within Termination and Referral states “Counselors refrain from referring prospective and current clients based solely on the counselor’s personally held values, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors.” There have been recent ethical issues where counsellor trainees have imposed their own values during field experiences that resulted in remediation efforts by counselor training programs, lawsuits filed and court cases (Hutchens, Block, & Young, 2013; Kocet & Herlihy, 2014).
