Based on the technique of PECS, describe your procedure of teaching a child to use pictures to exchange desired objects.

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary, but may include the following steps:
1. Identify several desired objects the child may request.
2. Remove the objects from their current location, and replace them with a picture of the object.
3. Prompt the child to hand the picture to the teacher to request the item.
4. Once the child makes the request (with prompts), give the child the object he/she requests.
5. Do this a few more times, gradually fading out the prompts, until the child can request the items independently with no prompts.
6. Place the developed pictures on a “picture board.”
7. Prompt the child to get the picture from the board and hand it to the teacher to request the desired objects.
8. Gradually fade the prompts until the child can request items independently.
9. Add new pictures of items to expand the child’s vocabulary.
