Explain why the use of statistics and testimony are less effective when dealing with a

controversial subject.  What types of supporting material might be more effective in such
cases?

What will be an ideal response?

To answer this question, students have to be able to understand that experts sometimes
disagree about controversial subjects and that audiences may differ in the amount of
credibility they give a particular expert.  Students also have to be able to suggest
alternatives to statistics and testimony.
