Both the amygdala and thalamus are involved in vigilance. The amygdala particularly plays a pivotal role in the recognition of emotional stimuli. An electroencephalogram (EEG) will show less low-frequency activity and bigger event-related potentials (ERPs) the more vigilant a person is.
