How do drug courts operate, and what are their advantages?

What will be an ideal response?

• Drug courts deal with offenders experiencing a drug problem as the basis of their criminality. Offenders are held accountable and must accept responsibility. Drug courts still oversee the criminal processing, yet all the court players (judges, prosecutors, defense counsel, probation officers, and treatment professionals) acknowledge the need for drug treatment (usually in the community), and therefore the adversarial nature of most criminal court proceedings is replaced with a much more collaborative one.Courts sentence offenders to treatment programs, recognizing that sanctions that merely increase in punitiveness for repeat offenses do not work for drug addicts. The judge continues to oversee the sentence and holds regular status review hearings with the offender to determine progress and compliance with conditions of the sentence. Preliminary evaluations of drug courts show some success in reducing drug use and future criminal activity.
