Before the 1980s, topcoats were more opaque, and would cover the undercoats without fear of shadows of the color underneath showing through. Undercoats were typically red or gray, and hiding was not a concern. When “glamour colors” were added, however, the basecoats became more translucent. As these translucent, poor hiding colors became more popular, the standard black, green, or red undercoats would often show through the new colors. To combat this poor hiding condition, undercoats were formulated to be tintable. When mixed, they could have color similar to the topcoat added to aid with poor hiding topcoats.
