The global transportation system impacts everyone. The convenience of being able
to travel anywhere in the world or to transport products in large quantities from A to B
has consequences:
1. Greenhouse Gases: The emissions from all forms of transport produce greenhouse
gases. The exhaust gases from vehicles, aircraft, ships, locomotives, etc., add to
greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
2. Noise: All forms of transport produce noise. If you stand on an overpass crossing a
busy interstate, holding a conversation with a friend would be difficult. Similarly,
a jet aircraft taking off will drown out a conversation.
3. Environmental Impact: The construction of a new road, airport, or rail track will
affect the local environment. These impacts will range from the reduction of land
available for leisure or other purposes, to the construction noise and dirt, to the
ongoing impact in terms of pollution and social impact of traffic fl ow.
