Identify and describe the five common sources of data that have been used to try to provide insight into the nature and extent of police misconduct.
What will be an ideal response?
There are five common sources of data that have been used to try to provide insight into the nature and extent of police misconduct. First, self-report surveys have been used. These surveys take two basic forms, one form asks officers to self-report on incidents of misconduct by coworkers and whether they reported their coworkers misconduct. The other asks officers their perception of the wrongfulness of actions in hypothetical situations. Other sources include citizen complaints, lawsuits against police, media reports, and finally decertification statistics. Decertification happens when an officer’s training credentials are revoked which makes him or her unemployable as a law enforcement officer. It should be noted that each of these sources has limitations, and as such, does not provide a truly accurate representation of the actual extent of police misconduct.
