Briefly discuss the differences between the new and old career paradigms.

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary. The time of the fast track to the top of the hierarchical organization is past. Also gone is the idea of lifetime employment in a single organization. The paternalistic attitude that organizations take care of employees no longer exists. Individuals now take on more responsibility for managing their own careers. The old career is giving way to a new career characterized by discrete exchange, occupational excellence, organizational empowerment, and project allegiance. The new career involves a type of participatory management technique on the part of the individual, but the organization responds to each individual's needs and thus is more flexible in its career development programs.
