Stress can be positive, as well as negative. Eustress is pleasurable, challenging, or exciting and not threatening. Distress is threatening and can impair function or overload the individual. Effective stress management depends on recognition of symptoms. Some job assignments are perceived as threatening by most individuals, while others depend on personal compatibility between the individual and his or her environment.
