Discuss ways that a counselor continues to develop both personally and professionally. What activities do you see yourself engaging in to grow?

What will be an ideal response?

The developmental process also involves intrapsychic investigations (e.g., reflections on own personality) and outward practical applications (e.g., role play, practicum, internship). The more experiences and interactions a counselor has, the more they have to reflect on. It is recommended that an individual take advantage of the opportunities provided within graduate training, maximize personal and professional interactions.

It is important to engage in the process of self understanding which includes: accurate emotional insight (e.g., emotional awareness), utilization of emotional awareness to regulate and monitor the emotion being felt prior to an immediate response, and evaluation of whether or not this intuitive emotional response is aligned with developing value system. This process will increase one’s internal locus of control and gives the ability of relying on inner resources and wisdom to overcome life challenges. Engaging in ongoing personal reflection and asking ourselves probing questions is critical for continued counselor development.
