Why has ivory been in such high demand throughout history? What are the negative effects of its use and the ivory trade in general? What steps are being taken to offset these effects?

What will be an ideal response?

Elephant ivory is a beautiful material that polishes to a yellowish sheen. It is durable, easy to work, and many cultures around the world have relied on ivory for small, portable luxury items. Acquiring the raw material means killing the elephant, which has dramatically reduced the world's elephant populations. To preserve existing populations, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora recommended banning the sale of ivory in 1989. Countries around the world have slowly complied.
