If you had to have a personality assessment, which type would you prefer: projective, interview, inventory, or behavioral observation? Would you want more than one approach taken? Describe each of the techniques in your explanation.

What will be an ideal response?

Students may present any of the following and indicate which they would prefer to complete: A clinical interview occurs when the client and the psychologist sit down face-to-face and use questioning to determine a person's history, diagnosis, and underlying personality structure. Unstructured interviews include open-ended questions that may lead anywhere, depending on the client's responses; structured interviews include specific, targeted questions. Personality can also be assessed through behavioral observations in different situations. This technique involves a psychologist watching and recording behaviors in different circumstances. Projective tests involve you interpreting something vague and ambiguous. The idea is that you will "project" your thoughts, feelings, conflicts, and personality style onto the picture. Lastly, a self-report inventory involves a questionnaire that asks respondents to rate themselves on various personality characteristics. Students will also comment on whether or not they would prefer to take only one test or if they would prefer more.
