The time frame during this chapter saw the transition from an industrial based economy to a more services based economy. What are the positives and negatives of this? How does this impact how American families had typically functioned? What impact
does this have for America in the future and the economic viability for families?
What will be an ideal response?
Jobs transitioning to service based jobs eliminated those jobs that were more secure, better paying, offered benefits and did not require more education in order to ensure a family’s place in the middle class. The positives revolve around widespread availability and less skill, etc. The negatives are as stated above. This is the basis for example of those blue collar workers who were so disenfranchised in the election of Trump. The income gap will continue to grow and there will be a large segment of the population who are unable to approach achieving the American dream. Much discussion can occur around this concept.
