Define and compare the Pennsylvania system and the Auburn system of confinement.
What will be an ideal response?
The Pennsylvania system (also called the separate system) required that inmates be kept in solitary cells so that they could study religious writings, reflect on their misdeeds, and perform handicraft work. In the Auburn system (named after Auburn Penitentiary, NY), inmates worked and ate together in silence during the day and were returned to solitary cells for the evening. The Auburn system gradually became more popular because the Pennsylvania system of solitary confinement led to a high rate of mental illness and because the Auburn system of prison labor was more profitable.
