What is the "stage of life phenomenon" in early adulthood?
What will be an ideal response?
The "stage of life phenomenon" is used as a reason for why college students binge drink and engage in heavy drinking. The transition out of high school increases the risk. Young people who enter college face a transition that brings many challenges and opportunities, including new roles; new friendship networks; increased autonomy and independence; separation from family and old friends; new academic choices and demands; and less parental support, guidance, and monitoring. All of these factors increase the risk for alcohol use. As individuals transition from high school to college, young people experience greater exposure to drinking and encounter higher levels of peer drinking and positive peer attitudes toward alcohol.
