List and discuss at least three barriers to communication. Briefly explain each one and the reason it causes a barrier.

What will be an ideal response?

E-mail can be a barrier because it does not allow for personal interpretation of
fluctuating and multiple meanings; slang can also be a barrier if both parties to a
conversation are not versed in its meanings. If someone is sitting with arms folded and
scowling, this posture can be a barrier; using different primary languages, such as English
and French, may provide a barrier. Attire can be a barrier, as it can lead to unfounded
conclusions about a person’s intelligence or ability to speak properly. The student should be
able to identify various types of barriers, as well as their impact on both listening and
communication in general.
