What is cognitive restructuring and how is it used in sex therapy?
What will be an ideal response?
Currently, many sex therapists are using a combination of behavioral exercises pioneered by Masters and Johnson and cognitive therapy-termed cognitive-behavioral therapy. Cognitive restructuring is an important technique in a cognitive approach to sex therapy. In cognitive restructuring, the therapist essentially helps the client restructure his or her thought patterns, helping them to become more positive. In one form of cognitive restructuring, the therapist challenges the client's negative attitudes. These attitudes may be as general as a woman's distrusting attitudes toward all men, or as specific as a man's negative attitudes toward masturbation. The client is helped to reshape these attitudes into more positive ones.
