Design an experiment to compare the effectiveness of a physical and a chemical method of disinfection
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary. Appropriate controls and methods should be included. An example is comparison of filtration and chlorine bleach.
Prepare a culture of bacteria of known cell concentration. Divide into three samples. Sample #1 is the positive control. Sample #2 is filtered using a specified pore size filter (0.45 micron maximum pore size) and the filtrate collected into a sterile container. Chlorine bleach is added to Sample #3 following manufacturer's directions for dilution. The three samples are incubated, then the turbidity of each is measured to determine if growth is evident in the two treated samples compared to the untreated sample.
