What types of emotional reactions do women experience after an abortion?
What will be an ideal response?
Many women feel relieved and have a sense of closure. Some women have feelings of anger, guilt,
regret, or sadness as part of a syndrome known as postabortion stress syndrome. These, in part,
might be a result of the abrupt hormonal changes that take place after an abortion. These same
feelings are similar to postpartum depression, which occurs after childbirth. Women who have
strong moral or religious opposition to abortion might be more likely to have a negative reaction to
abortion; therefore, it is important that women thoroughly examine their beliefs and feelings before
undergoing an abortion.
