Discuss what scientists know about hemispheric lateralization
What will be an ideal response?
The brain consists of a left and right hemisphere. The major connection between the two hemispheres is the corpus callosum. One general principle is that the right half of the brain receives information from and sends information to the left half of the body. The left half of the brain receives information from and sends information to the right half of the body. Additionally, it appears that there is some hemispheric specialization of function. For example, the left hemisphere, in most people, is responsible for language functions (speaking, reading, and writing). It is also the left hemisphere that
is primarily involved in logic, problem solving, and mathematical calculations. The right hemisphere is specialized for nonverbal functions. This includes spatial processing, facial and emotional recognition, and artistic/creative processes.
