How does reading help improve writing and vice versa?
What will be an ideal response?
Reading has definitely been shown to improve students? writing skills. The main reason is that it provides a model of form. Several research studies have shown that reading nonfiction trade books, hearing their teacher read, and even reading mysteries can result in more enriched writing by young students. They also learn stylistic features, model formats, and get ideas from their reading. They learn about writing if they ?read like a writer,? looking for styles, techniques, ideas, and format structures that authors use to create stories or convey information.
Having written in various genres, students are better able to organize information when reading in those genres because they understand their structure. Writing about text also involves thinking more deeply about the information in the text and organizing the information. Writing about text often requires reading the text several times and putting the text's ideas in one's words. These activities foster both understanding and retention.
