Explain why inulin is an ideal choice to measure renal clearance and the glomerular filtration rate (GFR)

What will be an ideal response?

Inulin, a plant polysaccharide, is filtered by the kidneys but it is neither reabsorbed nor secreted by the renal tubule or collecting system. For a substance to provide an accurate view of the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), the substance should be completely filtered yet neither reabsorbed nor secreted. If a substance is secreted by the renal tubules, the substance will show a greater renal clearance than GFR whereas substances that are reabsorbed will show a lower renal clearance than GFR.
