Define preterm birth and explain its impact on infant deaths

?Preterm birth is defined as a birth between 22 and 37 weeks gestation. U.S. infants' chances of surviving through first year of life are closely associated with preterm birth rates. Full-term birth is considered to occur from 37 to 41 weeks, though there has been more recently an emphasis on 39 weeks as a minimum full term. The second leading cause of infant deaths (17%) is preterm birth.
