Describe two ways in which the religious tensions between secular Jews and Orthodox Jews affect the security of Israel.
What will be an ideal response?
Israel is known both as a secular, democratic state and a Jewish state, and thus religious tensions have arisen between secular Jews and Orthodox Jews. These tensions undermine security in Israel in two ways. First, in Israel, there is compulsory military service, but ultra-Orthodox citizens have been exempted. Many Israelis question this practice. Secondly, Orthodox Jews believe that occupying territories is mandated by their religion, and these Jews often support continuing occupation. This occupation has been a source of conflict between Israel and its neighbors.
