• The newer version of al Qaeda, perhaps finding it difficult to execute large-scale operations such as the 9/11 attacks, has instead focused recently on smaller jobs involving American-born operatives.

After Faisal Shahzad, the Times Square suspect, was arrested, an Afghan Taliban leader bragged that with "all this new technology, it's not difficult to recruit people in the West.". He also claimed to have received hundreds of e-mails from potential homegrown American terrorists who "want to join us.".
