Architecture is made to serve the community in which it exists. The construction of an overhead lattice at the Plaza de la Encarnación shows how a structure can unify a space. The Metropol Parasol responds to the needs of the local community and attracts tourists to a part of town they might otherwise have ignored. Social notions of gender are regularly reflected in architecture. For example, the harem is a private area of retreat and solace away from the business of the court. Although the sultan occupied the rooms with his family, the harem came to be seen as a space for women.
