Explain how career decisions are linked to the young adult’s development of self-identity. How can counselors help clients during this stage of decision-making?

What will be an ideal response?

Besides family life, vocational life is a vital domain of social development in early adulthood. Emerging young adults must learn how to perform work tasks well, get along with coworkers, respond to authority, and protect their own interests. When work experiences go well, young adults develop new competencies, feel a sense of personal accomplishment, make new friends, and become financially independent and secure. Finding personal relationships as well as work environments that are satisfying are both important during early adulthood. Work plays an important part in the lives of adults not only because of the income it brings but also because it is linked to the individual’s self-identity. Career choice affects friendships, living location, child care, job stress, and other aspects of life. Some individuals may still be going through the process of defining their career as discussed in the previous chapter, while others are getting settled into their career. Realizing that achievement, recognition, satisfaction, security, challenge, and relationships with colleagues are all important to having a satisfying career, counselors can work with clients at both of these stages in career development to encourage a positive work environment.
